Updated physicals are required for all children under the age of 6. A copy of each child’s physical and immunization record must be on file at the school. All physicals must be updated annually from the date of their last physical. Children whose physicals expire during the school year must have an updated physical. Please keep this in mind and make an appointment with your doctor before the physical expires (appointments may be delayed in busy offices). Click here for State Immunization Requirements.
Sick Child Policy: A child should be kept at home if they have any communicable diseases. Please report (via phone message) any contagious illness to the Director, and send a note to Chapel School upon the child’s return. The day that a contagious illness is reported to the Director, a “Notification of a Reported Communicable Disease” form is posted on the bulletin boards for each classroom. Teachers are not allowed to administer medication. All staff are certified in First Aid and CPR. Teachers are qualified to administer an Epi-pen. If suspicious symptoms develop at school, the child will be isolated until he/she can be taken home. The child will go to a quiet space in the classroom or library to sit or lie down quietly until the parent arrives. If the Director is not in the building, the Administrative Assistant will isolate the child and make them comfortable until the parent/guardian arrives. In the event of illness or emergency when the parent or emergency contact person cannot be reached, your personal physician will be contacted. A child must be fever free for 24 hours and if your child has been vomiting, they must be able to retain food for a 24 hour period before returning to school.
Seasonal allergies: Children with seasonal allergies can feel quite uncomfortable when allergy symptoms are present. If a child cannot focus during the time that they are at school, has a hard time participating or cannot mange their symptoms, a parent will be called to come and pick up the child.
Hand washing: All staff, students and parents must follow the standard hand washing procedures before entering the classroom. Procedures are posted for you to follow. Alcohol based hand rubs are not used in lieu of hand washing.
Diapering policy for children in the 2’s Program:
The staff will use the diapers/pull-ups as supplied and maintained by the child’s parent. The staff continually monitors the children for wet and/or soiled diapers/pull-ups during the 2 hour class period. Diapers/pull-ups are changed when wet or soiled. Children are changed only in the bathroom adjacent to the classroom. All children have the opportunity to use the bathroom for toileting (as appropriate) and hand washing as a group before snack.
Additional regulations:
1. Diapering will be done only in designated diapering areas. Food handling will not be permitted in diapering areas.
2. Surfaces in diapering areas will be kept clean, waterproof, and free of cracks, tears and crevices
3. Diapering disposal container has a foot pedal for opening the top.
4. The diapering area is cleaned and sanitized
5. Staff person’s hands are thoroughly washed as directed in the hand washing policy.
Toilet Training in the 3’s and 4’s Programs:
Chapel School will not exclude any child who is eligible for the 3 year-old programs who is not completely toilet trained. Parents are encouraged to attempt toilet training prior to entrance into the 3 year old program. If the student is not completely toilet trained, the parents must disclose this information to the director/teacher prior to the first class day of school in the fall. The teacher and parent will discuss a developmentally appropriate procedure to encourage toileting at home and school. Children eligible for the 4 year old program must be toilet trained unless there is a documented medical/developmental reason as to why training has not been completed.
Allergy medications and precautions: Staff is trained to administer an Epi-pen in the case of a severe allergic reaction. Any allergy medication must be brought to the school in a prescription container. Medication will be stored in a marked, safe & child-proof area for staff use. All students with severe allergies will have an allergy sheet posted in the classroom with his/her picture and information for quick reference by any staff member.
Sun Screen: The children are outside on all nice days for at least 20 minutes. The play yard has some natural shade. If you wish your child to wear sun screen, you may apply the sunscreen at home before you come to school.
Insect Repellent: Should be applied by the parent before coming to school if they so desire.
